Yesterday THQ told analysts that they still have 1.4 million of their UDraw tablets sitting around unsold. I joked on Twitter at the time that the unpopular peripheral could be this generations ET.
For those of you who weren’t alive in the 80s, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was a surprisingly unpopular Atari 2600 game. It was so unpopular that some say it contributed to the crash of the entire video game industry at the time.
Atari, loaded down with millions of the games shipped them off to a warehouse in El Paso, Texas and then had them driven to a dump in Alamagordo, New Mexico where they were encased in concrete and buried. I’m not making this up.
I asked THQ yesterday what their plans for the unsold gametablets were. They’re going to sell them, on the cheap, they tell me.
“They will/are being sold through retail at a significantly lower price,” a spokesperson told me in an email.
They haven’t answered when or where that may happen or for how much.
